Crestway High School peer educators were awarded certificates for completing a youth empowerment project organised through the Metro South Education District.
The project is aimed at Grade 9 and 10 pupils. They received their certificates during assembly on Wednesday May 25.
Youth facilitator Vicki-Lee Gelder-bloem said the pupils come together twice a week after school for 45 minutes.
The aim of the programme is to educate peers in a structured manner; informally role model healthy behaviour; recognise youth in need of additional help and refer them for assistance; provide psycho-social support to pupils in need; and help them advocate for resources and services.
The programme consists of seven lessons, four community projects, co-curricular class activities and one-on-one sessions.
Cheryl Jacobs, deputy principal of Crestway High School, said the programme ran from May last year to May this year.
“The project started when the pupils were in Grade 9 last year. They met twice a week after school to attend the programme which covers, for example, bullying and sexuality.”
