The City of Cape Town has given approval for the Upper Bree Street Market to go ahead and is now also a sponsor and partner of the initiative, aimed at responsibly breathing new life into the area.
The market, spearheaded by Station on Bree, will take place on Thursday November 4.
The First Thursday Upper Bree Street Market draws on Cape Town’s heritage as a place where locals and travellers would enjoy a day out in the city centre.
It will be a safe space, adhering to all Covid-19 protocols to ensure a healthy atmosphere.
Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said: “It has been very heartening to see our public spaces being increasingly occupied by events over the last month, an indication of an upward trend for the events and tourism sectors.
“As the City of Cape Town, we believe events will be central in revitalising the economy going forward.
“Our support for Upper Bree Street Market is part of a broader strategy to provide assistance to businesses still suffering from the impact of the pandemic. It is also aimed at ensuring we can revitalise the CBD by providing residents with safe spaces where they can enjoy a good time with family and friends.”
Champions of the market, The Station on Bree, celebrate their fifth birthday this year.
Owner Neil Basel said the venue has always guaranteed a great night out and the outside terrace is the perfect spot to take in the atmosphere of the city.
“The Upper Bree Street Market has been a major success in the past and has introduced the Station on Bree to an entirely new audience. We cannot wait to responsibly bring life back into the city and lead the way in eventing while living through Covid-19.”
The market will offer a variety of entertainment, including a pottery, art and food experience from Clay Cafe, and a champagne and oyster sunset session by Sea Breeze, among others.
The market will include over 30 local vendors that will sell, fashion, accessories, art, gadgets, coffee, desserts and more. The vendors are made up of the local surrounding community as well as parishioners of St Paul’s Church, where money made by these parishioners will go back into the church to help them in all their community upliftment projects.
There will also be 10 gourmet food trucks, a local art exhibition and musical acts by Good Luck, Pascal & Pearce and Jimmy Nevis.
Celebrity chef Peter Goffe-Wood will also be around to meet visitors.
