Members of the City’s Strandfontein Pavilion upgrade project team fielded questions from the public about the current concept design phase of the project at an open day held at the pavilion on Saturday.
The open day was part of the City’s recreation and parks department’s month-long public participation process, which ends on Monday November 4.
“Your input is vital as we work together to revitalise the Strandfontein Pavilion and transform it into a vibrant, inclusive coastal destination that serves the entire community,” said mayoral committee member for community services and health Patricia van der Ross.
Originally built in the 1980s as a day resort, parts of the ageing pavilion have been condemned by the City’s building inspector.
According to the City, the upgrade project, as part of the Strandfontein coastal urban node development framework, will see the refurbishment of the pavilion and its associated coastal amenities, ensuring accessibility for all and improved safety and security while balancing development with biodiversity through thoughtful design.
Following the public participation process, consultants will be appointed to further develop the design, incorporating community feedback into the next stages.
The project is expected to start in 2026.
The public can email comments to strandfonteinpavilion.refurb@capetown.gov.za or deliver them in person to the Sub-council 17 office at the Lentegeur administrative building on the corner of Melkbos and Merrydale roads. Or visit the City’s website to have your say.
