The Cape Flats Development Association (CAFDA) launched a Junior Resource Centre on Thursday April 26.
The centre, which is run from their premises in Schaapkraal, is part of a school after-care programme for children as well as an information centre and training venue for residents of Egoli informal settlement and the surrounding areas.
This facility was created to provide a safe, stimulating environment for the children and adults.
Eben Saal, a project co-ordinator for CAFDA, said the resource centre was opened to enable residents to develop into healthy, informed and productive citizens.
“During after-care the children are supervised by a trained resident from Egoli, who helps the children with homework, numeracy, literacy, life-skills training,” said Mr Saal.
The children are also provided with a snack, themed workshops, educational and recreational activities and helped by the facility’s social workers. It runs from 2.30pm till 4.30pm every weekday afternoon.
Other programmes at CAFDA include skills training in welding, electrical work and plumbing.
