Mavis Smith turned 96 years old, on Monday September 4 and she celebrated her birthday with her family, on Sunday September 10.
Lionel Smith, her son, said “we are a big family, with 5 brothers, 5 Sisters and 29 grandchildren. She has too many great-grandchildren, I can’t keep count.”
Mr Smith said his mother was very strict and when “we were younger we were not allowed to play with other children. We were taught to respect other people and we grew up in Athlone. Mr Smith said his mother never complained when she felt sick, but a few months ago we realised that she was a bit hard of hearing.”
Ms Smith used to work for Volkskas Bank, and Absa Bank all the years. “She cared a lot for her children, and still does today. I love my mother very, very much, I know how she supported us in everything we needed,” said Mr Smith.
