South Peninsula (SP) High School pupils earned gold medals in the World Scholar’s Cup event and their top 10 finish in the Cape Town Round has enabled them to qualify for the overall championship round at Yale University in the USA in 2023.
Principal Zeid Baker said the World Scholar’s Cup is a series of competitions held annually across the world. “South Peninsula High School had the privilege of hosting this year’s global event during October.”
The SP pupils received gold medals for coming 4th in Social Studies, 6th in Literature, and 8th in the Science component of the scholars challenge.
Mr Baker said the goal of the World Scholar’s Cup is to “challenge and stimulate students more than the standard school curriculum does through competitive and creative activities which they would not experience in the school environment. In the rounds of this competition, students from schools engage in a number of events, such as quizzes, organised debates and collaborative writing competitions.”
Mr Baker said some of the pupils at SP were fortunate enough to participate in both the Cape Town Regional Round as well as the Cape Town Global Round. “In the Global Round, the SP students competed against 180 students from schools across South Africa as well as across the world, including Botswana, Turkey, Egypt, Zambia, Kenya, Singapore, Indonesia and UAE.”
According to Mr Nicholas Dagnin, history teacher and also facilitator of the Scholars Cup programme at SP, “fund-raising has commenced in earnest to ensure that the SP team achieve their goal of participating in the finale of the World Scholar’s Cup next year.”
