Hamilton RFC is expanding its team by adding a girls rugby team, the first in their 148-year history.
The first ever girls practice session was held earlier this month. The club has chosen to focus on the high school girls’ age group to get started and build from there.
Charmaine Kayser, who played Sevens and the 15-a-side game for Western Province and South Africa, heads up the coaching team. Axolile Apleni, a first team player at Hamilton and head coach Robert Oliver are in supporting roles.
Hamilton says they have big plans for the girls’ side and are working towards securing sponsorship in order to become a competitive side in the women’s league.
The club has its training sessions in their home ground at Stephen Way, Green Point, on Sundays, between 10am and noon.
