Samsung gives visitors to the MWC a first look at the Galaxy Ring.
At their "Galaxy Unpacked" event on the 17th. January 2024, Samsung has introduced an exciting wearable that belongs to a completely new product category. What the South Korean company at this time only teased with a striking video and the name, now gets a "face" - and a release date.
At the MWC, visitors were able to take a look at the prototype of the ring, which will be the flagship of a new product category from Samsung.
And even if the tech giant emphasizes during the presentation that the final product can still change, it became clear which goals Samsung associates with the new product line.
So they not only want to launch another wearable, but also to see the Galaxy Ring "as part of the company's vision for a future of environmental sensors," it was said.
The Galaxy ring prototypes that were on display at the MWC were presented in three colors: platinum-silver, ceramic-black and gold.
According to Samsung, the Galaxy Ring is lighter than it looks and does not feel as heavy as it appears. It has a slightly concave shape and each color should be offered in sizes 50 to 70, which is a slightly larger selection than that of the current market leader Oura.
Samsung's Vice President for Digital Health, Dr. Hon Pak, held back at the MWC with concrete explanations and did not indicate exactly which sensors are included in the ring.
However, he confirmed that the ring provides insights into sleep based on heart rate, movement and breathing indicators.
He also stated that Samsung's partnership with the Natural Cycles app - which has already integrated menstrual and fertility tracking into the Galaxy Watch series - will also be extended to the ring. At the latest, these functions bring the new Galaxy Ring into direct competition with the Oura Ring.
As Pak also explained, the battery size of the Galaxy Ring increases slightly with the larger sizes, although no exact estimates of battery life have been given so far. The Galaxy Ring should also help Samsung introduce a new metric called My Vitality Score into the Health app in the near future.
This function is based on a model from the University of Georgia that includes four factors in the holistic health analysis: sleep, activity, resting heart rate and heart rate variability.
So far, the market for smart rings has been dominated mainly by start-ups. With the introduction of the Galaxy Ring, Samsung is now trying to gain a foothold in this emerging segment as the first major tech group. Samsung has not yet revealed when exactly and at what price the Galaxy Ring will be launched.
