Drummer and composer Kesivan Naidoo and his ensemble, Kesivan & The Lights, are set to embark on a national tour titled Freedom in Sound.
The tour will honour South Africa’s rich jazz heritage to celebrate 30 years of democracy, while offering a fresh, modern interpretation of its jazz masters.
It comes to the Baxter theatre for one night only on Saturday May 10 when there will also be a special live recording to capture the energy and spirit of the project for a new album.
Naidoo, a multi-award-winning drummer, composer, and jazz visionary, is known for his innovative approach to South African jazz. He is joined by Darren English, an internationally acclaimed trumpeter who blends technical brilliance with deep emotional expression; Bokani Dyer, a SAMA-winning jazz pianist and composer whose music bridges tradition with modern jazz; Charley Rose, a saxophonist who effortlessly weaves between classic jazz traditions and contemporary experimentation; Fabio Gouvêa, a versatile and inventive guitarist, adding a rhythmic and harmonic richness to the band’s sound; and Joan Codina on bass bringing both groove and melodic sensitivity to the rhythm section.
Reflecting on the tour, Kesivan says: “Music has always been at the heart of our nation’s journey, a voice for resistance, resilience, and renewal. With Freedom in Sound, we pay tribute to those who came before us while imagining the possibilities of our future.”
