Despite the trials and tribulations they faced last year and the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic still looming, the five members of PerfectFifth_SA have proven that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
It all started five years ago on the benches of Heathfield High school when founder Alex van As started the group with some of his schoolmates. Over the five years members had left and others joined and only two of the original band members, from Heathfield High, are still in the band and were doing well with plenty of successes. They performed covers at shows and events and even recorded their own single “Inevitable” but when the pandemic hit and shows were cancelled, the group had to reassess as many others in the entertainment industry have had to do.
But the setback made them even more determined – so when everything stopped it gave the band more time to concentrate on their own music. They spent more time in the studio and as a result they’re releasing their debut album “Life is a journey” next month.
Drawing inspiration from Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles the band plays mostly soul funk, jazz and RnB.
Founder Alex said Cape Audio College in Observatory offered them an opportunity to record.
The album has eight tracks, each of which tells a story.
“It is relatable and each song tells a story about journeys we go through in life.
The band also plan on giving back to the community because all proceeds made from the album launch will go towards opening a music academy.
“There’s a dire need for music and arts programmes in Steenberg and Retreat and that’s where we want to impact the community by buying equipment, starting an academy and giving music lessons to children,” said Alex.
The band consists of guitarist, Ryan Nolan from Pelican Park, drummer Liam Webb and Samuel Frans who’s on keys are both from Steenberg, vocalist David Jacobs from Lotus River and bassist and manager Alex van As from Retreat.
The live album launch will happen online on Saturday March 6 at 8pm and tickets cost R30 and are available on Webtickets. It will also be available on music platforms such as Spotify, iTunes and Deezer at a later date.
