Makhadzi's ‘One-Woman Show’: A night of triumph and disappointment
Limpopo artist Makhadzi made history when she hosted her one-woman show.
Although it was not her first-ever “One-Woman Show” since she had previously done it in Botswana, it was the first time hosting it in South Africa.
The concert was held at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane this past weekend was attended by thousands of people who filled the stadium to support the award-winning artist.
According to attendees, gates were supposed to open at 12pm but due to delays, it was only opened at 5pm.
One festival-goers, @Peace expressed his frustration after paying R16 000 for a VVIP ticket, which promised eight VIP access tickets to the event, R8000 bar tab, private seating inside the marquee, access to a photobooth, excellent stage view, access to a private waiter and a finger lunch.
Instead, they got two tables with no marquee in sight, just a stadium suite, no glasses, no ice bucket, two bottles of gin, one whisky and several cans of mixers.
Although that part of the show was disappointing, @Peace clarified that he spoke about it because he loved Makhadzi and wanted her to do better next time.
“I am so angry neh, but if they would say Makhadzi is having a show next week. I am sorry you will find me there again with a lunch box and stuff,” he said.
Meanwhile, both fans and colleagues in the music industry were so happy for her, considering how far she’s come.
At the early stages of her career, Makhadzi used to sell CDs on the streets and perform at local taverns. Now, she’s doing international shows and filling up stadiums, a commendable growth.
“The Queen was still backstage at 4:30 in the morning making sure everything ran smooth. Such focus is rare in the music industry. She wasn't at the after-party she was at her show till sunrise. Respect Makhadzi,” said music producer DJ Tira.
Singer Sho Madjozi added: “This is not a label, this is not built by executives somewhere, this is sheer ambition, sheer drive and power. An artist that is for and by the people.”
Fellow musician, Cassper Nyovest, known for filling up stadiums, also congratulated Makhadzi.
Other artists who supported her were grateful to be part of history.
“Thank you for trusting me by your side. I love you and I'm super proud of you @MakhadziSA. History made! What a night,” said rapper Gigi Lamayne.
Makhadzi, who was left speechless after the show, thanked everyone who made her dream come true.
