TopDog SA will be taking patrons on an indigenous journey with their second instalment of the Nama Jazz Series at the Artscape Theatre from Thursday December 28 to Sunday December 31.
The band includes Don Vino Prins on saxophone, Camillo Lombard on keyboard, Charlton Daniels on bass, Mornay Hofmeester on drums and Mark Williams on lead guitar.
The musicians will also play instruments used by the Cape Khoena, such as mouth bows, the Boesman’s Klawier, the talking drum and rice shakers.
They will be performing songs from their album, Griqua DNA. The group will be drawing from the ancient well of African music and fusing it with modern Cape Jazz traditions in the series themed, This is Who We Are.
Speaking on what audiences could expect, Lombard said: “Nama Jazz II will explore deeper into our indigenous roots. Our quest in pushing the indigenous envelope has led us to understanding our genealogical thread as a Southern African people, and in our case, the people from the Western !Xamka (Cape). People will experience musical stories of our journey endorsing our musical geniuses of the past, with a modern jazz context influenced by our visit to the San Park on the West Coast Route !Khwa ttu”.
Tickets cost R70 and are available through Artscape Dial-a-Seat on 021 421 7839 or Computicket.
