Food for Life cooks up a storm in meal marathon

Dozens of volunteers and representatives from 125 communities across Cape Town served 25 000 meals at the weekend, as part of an annual food-a-thon.

Food for Life volunteers peeled, chopped vegetables and cooked about 100 pots of vegetarian food at the municipal water and sanitation depot in Schaapkraal.

The depot is next to the humanitarian organisation’s base, from where it distributes food weekly.

Non-profit, non-government organisations, faith-based groups or those working closely with their communities collected food from the distribution point on Saturday September 25.

Last year they served 12 800 meals and this year they met their target of feeding 25 000 people, some from as far as Cloetesville in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Food for Life South Africa, which aims to eradicate hunger and malnutrition in the country, is part of Food for Life Global, a non-profit vegetarian food-relief organisation, which was founded in 1995 but has roots tracing back to 1974 and Indian spiritual teacher Srila-Prabhupada, the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.

Organisations are invited to collect food and distribute in the areas they serve.

Naynesh Deva, chairman of Food for Life Cape Town, welcomed those collecting food and thanked them for reaching out for help and enabling them to help.

“It was a collective effort with volunteers, donors, supporters in cash and kind, encouraging everyone to sponsor, cook and serve our fellow citizens,” he said.
