Top matric achievers honoured

Pictured at Leeuwenhof with Western Cape Education Department DG Alan Meyer and Premier Alan Winde are Reese Basson, Aaminah Harris, Zayaan Bedford and Gulfaam Roomaney. Aaminah, Zayaan and Gulfaam achieved 8 distinctions each. Reese achieved 6 distinctions. The SP matric class achieved an 87% Bachelor’s rate with over 200 subject distinctions. Aaminah and Zayaan have been accepted for medicine. Reese will be studying a BCom degree at UCT and Gulfaam a business sciences degree at UCT. All four students received laptops and a monetary award to assist with their university studies. 40 top achievers in the province were honoured at the event.

Four South Peninsula (SP) High School matriculants were honoured at the Western Cape Premier’s Awards for Top Achievers in the province, on Thursday February 2.

Some of South Peninsula High's current medical degree students as well as those registered for study in 2023 attended the memorial lecture of the Dr Aadil Moerat Medical Bursary Trust at SP on Sunday January 22. Principal Zeid Baker said the lecture was presented by Dr Keith Cloete, the Western Cape Health Department Head. Dr Aadil Moerat was killed 25 years ago at his surgery in Gugulethu. He was known as the "people's doctor" for his service in poor communities. Pictured with Dr Cloete are Mogamat Yusri Theunissen (1st year UCT MBCHB), Saamiyah van Niekerk (3rd year UCT MBCHB), Aaminah Harris (1st year UStell MBCHB), Kirsten Links (2nd year UStell MBCHB), Zayaan Bedford (1st year UCT MBCHB), Fatima Sambo (1st year UStell MBCHB) and Ameer Hendricks (Dentistry UWC). Aaminah Harris received a bursary from the Dr Aadil Moerat Bursary Trust for 2023.

Grassdale High School matrics of the class of 2022 have been gleaming after achieving a 94.6% pass rate, according to Peter Hendricks, head of department. The top matrics are Jelson Miguel, Azraa Williams and Cindy Loggenberg.

Jelson Miguel was Grassdale High School’s top achiever.
