Siblings Jade and Justin Barends, from Morgan Village, have created The Impossible Dreams Productions.
The Barends siblings of Morgan Village want to make a difference in their community through film-making.
Jade Barends, 28, and Justin Barends, 32, have created The Impossible Dreams Productions with their new series called Chess Moves.
It was inspired by Jade’s concept of the tragic demise of a young man and finding the guilty party between friends and family.
This project also allows for opportunities for those with a desire to act but do not have the qualifications or access to the industry, said Justin.
“We’re excited for this journey that will be the start of an independent film-making production team. As young people, we also get to share the lessons in life and allow for the older generation to support and guide youngsters,” he said.
The YMCA Cape Flats and Oasis in Schaapkraal have partnered with The Impossible Dreams for venue facilities. They have also partnered with Die Duine Primary School, in Lotus River, which Jade and Justin attended as children.
“In our work it is important to tell stories of those who’ve faced hardships and also shining a light on the lives and hard work of SAPS and detectives in the industry,” he said.
They will be based in Morgan Village, Strandfontein, Schaapkraal and Woodstock.
Justin was in a car accident a few weeks ago, causing major delays in the production.
“An e-hailing driver knocked into the side of the car. It left me feeling hopeless for a moment. I was going to sell my car to make up the required money to fund my own project,” he said.
He was at the point of giving up, he said. The support of family, close friends and a supportive cast helped him continue.
“I knew I could not give up. There are people out there who need the opportunity and need to see this story for it to change their lives,” he said.
Ismail Baredien and Jade are the script writers and Shamiel Isaacs, 23, from Parkwood Estate, is their lead cinematographer.
Jade said she has been learning so much, especially about herself. “We get to work with different people around Cape Town and we get to understand their life's journey, bringing something so new to the world that could possibly change the way the next generation thinks,” she said.
Arendsvlei actor Tevin Eagleson said being part of this production is refreshing. “It’s a unique production. Big ups to our producer and director for going all out to ensure we’re happy and excited about the future. The passion must be alive, our purpose is to inspire to aspire.”
Shamiel Isaacs, lead cinematographer, said people who are working in the film industry should keep their heads up and stay focused.
“There will be people watching your work and wanting to work with you based on what you presented. Keep working on your dreams no matter the circumstances,” he said.
