UWC honours former vice-chancellor

A bust of former UWC rector and vice-chancellor Professor Richard van der Ross was unveiled at the university's new faculty of education building on Tuesday. A resource centre in the building was also named after Professor Van der Ross, who was appointed as the rector and vice-chancellor of the university in 1975, the first person of colour to hold the position. Professor Van der Ross died in 2017. Pictured at the unveiling of the bust are current UWC rector and vice-chancellor Tyrone Pretorius and Freda Brock, Professor Van de Ross’s daughter, who described her father as “a decent human being who believed in people and in the potential of people”.
