Pupils of Zwaanswyk Academy, in Retreat, showcased their support for the South African athletes at the Olympic Games, taking place in Paris, France, by forming the national flag on their school grounds.
Principal Anthony Adams, said: “The idea to form a flag came from our deputy principal Helen Steyn, on Thursday July 25. Fortunately our house colours are the colours of the South African flag and we asked the children to come dressed in the house colours. We did the flag in the cold and wet weather. The idea is to send well wishes to the Olympic team and also to generate some excitement among our children. The children really bought into this. We followed this up with an assembly where we highlighted the origin of the Olympics, the meaning, history, why people participate and what the rings mean, shown in a video.”
