The search is on for a “hopeful hero” who can make Cape Town laugh out loud with R10 000 and a chance to perform in front of thousands up for grabs.

The City’s People of Hope Comedy Competition is open to aspiring comedians of all ages who are ready to bring their best “hopeful humour” to the stage.

There is a R10 000 first prize with R5000 and R2000 prizes for second and third places.

The top three will get a chance to perform at the Festive Lights Switch-On happening on the Grand Parade Sunday December 1.

“Our people are people of hope and express themselves through humour that shines through the heart of Cape Town,” said mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith.

To enter the competition, submit a one-minute stand-up comedy video about “people of hope” on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or X (Twitter).

Videos must be original, family-friendly and not contain any offensive content or political and religious themes – just good, clean fun.

Entrants must tag the official Cape Town Festive Lights account, @CTFestiveLights, and use the hashtag #PeopleOfHopeLaugh #CTFestiveLights. It’s not necessary to submit the entry on all platforms.

The closing date for entries is Friday November 15. The top ten will be selected for a live “laugh off” at the V&A Waterfront on Saturday November 23.

The judge include Lunga Tshuka, Angel Campey and Stuart Taylor.

For more details on how to enter and to read the competition’s full terms and conditions, visit the official Cape Town Festive Lights Switch-On social media platforms.

The annual Festive Lights Switch-On draws thousands of people to the heart of the city.
