The Fun Time Sporting Club choir getting their voices in tune.
Many minstrel troupes around Cape Town aim to use their team to keep youngsters off the street but at Fun Time Sporting Club in Westridge, the focus is on giving elderly a good time.
PRO for the club and exco member, Ashraf Adams, said the journey started when a group of friends started singing for a neighbouring choir.
“We had a very good family style environment and we just kept growing,” Mr Adams said.
After reaching sufficient numbers, the choir decided to pull out on their own, starting the club in June, earlier this year.
“Our goal is to give our members and their families a memorable ou jaar aand, for us, by us,” he proudly said.
Members of the club hail from all parts of Mitchell’s Plain, Eastridge, Portlands and many more, but the sporting club wanted to do things with a difference.
“We really wanted to invest our time into the elderly, because over the years, we have so much to learn from them, so why then let them feel that they don’t belong?” Mr Adams asked.
“Or is their time is up? That’s so sad and we have an amazing culture that the elderly enjoy and that has been passed onto the youth, but what are we passing onto them?”
Abdullah Beg from Hanover Park is one of the club’s oldest members at 73. He said he loved the idea of “fun” and that is why he joined.
“I like this team, because they are like a real family. Meetings, practice or whatever, it turns into some real fun and I just want to be with them, as most of them are around my age,” Mr Beg said.
“We adore this team and it’s all we ever talk about. If we talk, we talk fun and we have a good time, therefore we call ourselves Fun Time.”
Fun Time Sporting Club has already gone on to support several organisation and fundraising campaigns, offering their services for free, all for the sake of supporting a cause and having a good time.
“That is all the guys want to do is have a bit of fun, singing and laughing with good people can be really good for your health,” Mr Adams said.
“Why not have fun and support other great causes at the same time?”
He further explained that although it’s all fun and games, thing get serious when the team has to prepare for competitions and this is when the struggle creeps in.
“Every team sitting with that issue of getting help with the costumes and things, so it’s no different here at our team and we always asking for help to continue this great legacy and tradition,” Mr Adams said.
In an attempt to start raising funds towards their next competition, Fun Time Sporting Club will host a Market/Bazaar Day at the Lobelia Hall in Lavender Hill on November 23 from 10am till 5pm.
The day is expected to have lots of food on offer, entertainment as well as plenty to do for the kids. For more details or to grab hold of a food booklet at R100, contact Mr Adams on 084 953 2968.
