A REMARKABLE display of compassion and generosity has seen the people of Kimberley rally together to support the local SPCA through the "Bowlful of Love" charity drive, which collected over two tons of pet food to help feed rescued animals in need.
What began as a simple appeal by RealNet Kimberley on February 1, quickly turned into a city-wide initiative, with individuals, businesses and community groups stepping up to make a difference. By the end of the campaign on February 28, donations had poured in, amounting to 230 bags of dry pet food, 111 cans of wet food, and a variety of extra treats and accessories. Even the horses at the SPCA were not forgotten, with 20 lucerne bales added to the haul.
With animal welfare organisations across the country struggling to keep up with rising demands, the timing of the campaign was crucial. In just the first two weeks of February, the Kimberley SPCA took in 200 new animals, making the need for food and resources greater than ever.
Beyond donations, the RealNet Kimberley team took to the streets, engaging with the public at supermarkets and spreading awareness about the urgent needs of the SPCA. Local volunteers and businesses also played a vital role, contributing to the success of the drive. The response was overwhelming, proving once again that Kimberley is a city that cares.
Speaking about the initiative, Arnold van der Walt, owner of RealNet Kimberley, expressed gratitude for the incredible support from the public.
“The kindness and generosity we witnessed were beyond our expectations,” said Van der Walt. “We were truly humbled by the generosity shown by the people of Kimberley. Donations came from individuals across all walks of life.”

While the success of the campaign has provided a much-needed boost to the SPCA’s food supplies, organisers are now looking at ways to create lasting change. As part of their continued commitment, RealNet Kimberley is now partnering with the SPCA to develop an AI-driven social media campaign aimed at improving pet adoption rates.
"We connect hearts and homes," said Van der Walt, "and now we also want to connect paws with yards, ensuring every animal finds a loving family."
With shelters facing an influx of abandoned and neglected animals, organisers emphasise that donations alone are not enough - awareness and action are needed to address the root causes of the crisis.
The SPCA, known for its tireless work in rescuing and caring for animals, faces ongoing challenges such as abandonment, backyard breeding and a lack of sterilisation awareness.
While the Bowlful of Love campaign has officially concluded, the Kimberley SPCA continues to rely on community support. Those who wish to make a difference can still contribute by donating pet food, funds, or even volunteering their time.
Beyond providing essential supplies, this initiative has reignited important conversations about animal welfare and the role the community can play in creating a kinder, more compassionate Kimberley.
For those looking to help further, adoptions and donations can be arranged directly through the Kimberley SPCA.
