Grassy Park community policing forum (CPF) and Grassy Park South African Police Services (SAPS) in partnership with the Mitchell's Plain Sub-district CPF hosted a community imbizo event at Perivale Primary School, in Lotus River, on Saturday March 15.
Nicole Jacobus, chairperson of Grassy Park CPF said the event aimed at providing communities with an opportunity to voice their safety and security concerns regarding the “adverse effect” of the recent gang violence, SAPS service delivery, educating the community about crime patterns and preventative crime initiatives and the importance of collaboration between Law Enforcement agencies, external role players and community.
The community voiced their concerns and received a positive response from SAPS.
“Colonel Andre Van Wyk, station commander of Grassy Park SAPS assured the community that social crime prevention will be addressed and driven, and parenting skills programmes must be implemented to empower parents to deal with the youth. Communities should be proactive by initiating their own crime prevention programs in conjunction with CPF and SAPS and strategic operations are being put in place to curb criminal activity.”

The keynote speaker for Sub-district CPF, Rafique Foflonker stressed the importance of collaboration with external role players (religious sector, businesses, sports bodies, private security and neighbourhood watches etc.) in the fight against crime.
Ms Jacobus requested that more of the public attend these events to voice their concerns in future engagements such as these “as we continue to strive in our commitment to eradicate crime in our communities, however, we continue to encourage our communities to work together as partners in the fight against crime.”
