The City of Cape Town has planned roadworks along the median of Wetton Road in July, as part of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service roll-out.

The work will take place at the intersection providing access to the Racecourse in Wynberg, extending from Rosmead Avenue to the base of the Wetton Road/M5 bridge.

According to Councillor Rob Quintas, the mayoral committee member for urban mobility, the project is scheduled to start in mid-July and is expected to continue for about a month, weather permitting.

Motorists should be aware that one eastbound lane will be closed as vehicles approach the racecourse, he said.

The roadworks form part of ongoing improvements along Wetton Road in preparation for a future MyCiTi bus facility.

“We again thank residents and all road users for their patience while this important work is underway, and we urge everyone to please follow the safety signage on site,” said Mr Quintas.

“Importantly, please allow for possible commuting delays along this route. While we are doing our utmost to limit the impact on traffic flow, roadworks are by their nature disruptive, and we understand the frustration this may cause,” he said.

Scope of work includes:

  • Widening a portion of Wetton Road to accommodate dedicated left and right-turn lanes into the planned bus facility
  • Upgrading and formalising the existing Racecourse access
  • Formalising sidewalks along Wetton Road
  • Improving the stormwater system
  • Installing sewer connections and water mains
  • Resurfacing the road, with new road markings and signage
