Wynberg police are investigating a tragic incident after a man died after jumping in front of an oncoming train at Wynberg railway station on Saturday, November 29.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said the incident happened around 10.30am when a man, whose identity is still unknown, jumped in front of a train. “He was struck by the train and sustained critical injuries,” he said.
Captain Van Wyk said that medical services were called to the scene, and he was taken to a nearby hospital. “However, he died on the way to the hospital,” he said.
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) spokesperson, Zinobulali Mihi said the organisation was aware of the tragic incident currently under investigation. “No foul play is suspected based on preliminary information received by our security personnel at the station,” she said.
Ms Mihi said PRASA would like to advise all customers and community members to observe safety notices/alerts at the stations and adhere to them, as these stations are operational areas. “For safety education awareness purposes, the region conducts regular rail safety campaigns at stations, onboard the trains, schools, malls, and shares safety digital videos and alerts on our social media platforms,” she said.
Ms Mihi said that PRASA shared its condolences with the family and those affected. “We will give an update on the matter as more information becomes available,” she said.
