Two suspects, facing charges for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as attempted murder, have been remanded to Pollsmoor Prison until Friday, January 23, when a formal bail application will be heard.

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, provincial police spokesperson, said: “Continued efforts to combat gang violence in the Steenberg policing precinct yielded results on Thursday,  January 1, when police arrested two suspects following a high-speed chase.”

Sergeant Twigg said members of the Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit had received information about a suspicious Toyota Etios in Tango Crescent, Steenberg. Upon locating the vehicle, police attempted to stop it, but the driver sped off, prompting a high-speed pursuit. During the chase, one of the occupants fired shots at pursuing officers.

"The vehicle eventually came to a halt on Joe Marks Boulevard after the driver lost control," he said.

After the 34 and 42-year-old suspects were apprehended, a search of car revealed a 9mm pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition.
