Victoria Maheso, a young woman from Hammaskral in Gauteng, recently died in Moscow, Russia where she was studying mathematics and computer science. Friends and family of the gifted young woman have appealed to South Africa to assist financially in bringing her home.
Maheso died on February 23. She was the founder of the South African International Students Association (SAISA), an organisation aimed at arming students who are abroad with knowledge of youth policy opportunities for South Africans in countries where they are studying.
"I am an advocate for youth affairs. I am passionate about youth development, intercultural communication and public diplomacy. I am a barrier breaker, changing the world one student at a time and one equation at a time," Maheso was quoted saying.
The young scientist whose star burned too brightly, and just as fast, was described as a loving daughter and sister. She inspired countless other ambitious individuals to follow their dreams, even internationally.
Her family went on to say that they are overwhelmed by the cost of bringing her home and estimated that it would be about R100,000 to usher her to her final resting place.
"We are seeking to repatriate her back home for a dignified funeral. This is an incredibly difficult time for her family and any contributions will help alleviate the financial burden associated with this problem," her family wrote.
The following bank account was provided:
Capitec Bank: 216 935 0698
"I will always remember and admire your fighting spirit and dedication to helping your fellow students abroad. It was a privilege to fight alongside you," posted another SA expat on her passing.
