The New Horizon Neighbourhood Watch commemorated national Women’s Day with a human chain on Tuesday August 9.
The group were joined by their ward councillor Gerry Gordon and Pelican Park residents on Strandfontein Road between 15th and 18th avenues to raise awareness of the importance of the day, and the significance of the women’s march on August 9, 1956 when 20 000 women of all races marched on the Union Buildings to hand over a petition against apartheid’s pass laws.
The human chain highlighted the various types of abuse women still suffer daily and the group pledged to continue to fight against this abuse.
