Steenberg police, with the assistance of officers from Operation Combat, the Stabilisation Unit, the National Intervention Unit and other law enforcement agencies, have increased crime prevention duties in the precinct to address gang violence and drug-related incidents.
Last week 44 people were arrested for various crimes, during these operations. Officers searched 47 houses for illegal firearms and drugs and stop-and-search operations were executed in the area.
A total of 25 packets of tik, 105 mandrax tablets and 96 sticks of dagga, 13 bankies of dagga and three parcels of dagga were taken off the streets and 16 mandrax tablets and 19 sticks of dagga were found abandoned.
The estimated street value of the drugs is R4 000.
The suspects appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court after they have been charged.
A 23-year-old man was arrested on Sunday April 15 at 11.50pm when police were tipped off about drug peddling in St Ambrose Circle in St Montague Village. The man was found in possession of 44 packets of crystal meth (tik) and 65 mandrax tablets, arrested and appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.
Five people were arrested on Friday April 13 at 6.20am when officers from the National Intervention Unit acted on a tip-off about
an illegal firearm at a house in Philmau Street, Lavender Hill.
When police searched a wendy house on the property, they found a black and brown imitation firearm and a black Browning firearm with its serial number filed off, and 10 rounds of ammunition.
Five men, aged between 16 and 30, were arrested for the possession of a firearm without a licence, possession of ammunition and possession of an imitation firearm.
The 16-year-old suspect was transferred to Wynberg police station to be assessed by the probation officer. The others appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.

Since the beginning of the month Muizenberg police have also had numerous operations in Hillview and surrounding areas, in their efforts to tackle gang violence.
During these operations, 22 people were arrested for possession of drugs and four were arrested for dealing in drugs.
On Wednesday April 11 an operation was held at the Steenvilla Complex, where the Muizenberg crime prevention unit, with the assistance of Operation Combat, searched various residences.
During the searches, two suspects were arrested, the first for possession of 20 packets of tik and the
other for the possession of 13 mandrax tablets, a small amount of dagga and three rounds of ammunition.
Thetwosuspects,aged28
and 24 years, are residents of Steenvilla. They appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday April 13.
