Grassy Park police arrest man for possession of unlicensed firearm

An Ottery man was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

A 29-year-old man was arrested and detained by Grassy Park police for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm on Friday, October 24, at about 6.30am.

According to Sergeant Alridge Isaacs, spokesperson for Grassy Park police, members of the Grassy Park VISPOL unit were patrolling in the Ottery area when they noticed a suspicious man along Edward Road.

“Upon seeing the police officers, the man started running. The members gave chase and apprehended him,” said Sergeant Isaacs.

Upon searching the suspect, officers found one black 9mm firearm with an extended magazine containing 28 live rounds in his right hand.

The suspect will be charged accordingly and is expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court today, Monday, October 27.

A man was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm after police seized a weapon in Ottery on Wednesday, October 22, at about 9.30pm.

According to Sergeant Isaacs, officers received information about a firearm being kept at Horizon Court in Ottery.

“The members proceeded to the mentioned address and, upon arrival, spoke to an occupant of the premises,” said Sergeant Isaacs. “The members enquired about the firearm, whereupon the occupant led them to the toilet area and pointed out the firearm that had been hidden there.”

Police recovered one 9mm pistol. The firearm was seized and booked in as an exhibit.

The suspect will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court once charged.
