Sea scouts win sailing awards

Letter to the Editor|Published 1 year ago

The 2nd Plumstead Sea scouts team.

Gilzean Sasman, 2nd Plumstead Sea Scout group leader

Well done to everyone who attended the 25th Mac 24-hour Sailing Challenge, at Milnerton Aquatic club, on Rietvlei, on Saturday March 23 and Sunday March 24.

The event sees sailors from across the Western Cape and South Africa sail at South Africa's only 24-hour sailing event.

The event is limited to mono hulls and dingy boats (under 4.5 metres) in length.

Words cannot explain how extremely proud of you we are. We were placed in the following categories: 1st in the Saldhana dinghies class and 1st in the Overall handicapped.

Not only is this the first time that a scout group has ever won Mac 24 but it is the first time a Saldanha has placed 1st in the handicapped. This is an amazing result.

A special mention to the following: Micah Davies, 16, spent 16 hours helming on boat 17 which won us the Endurance trophy. We are super impressed by his skills and determination shown this weekend.

Well done to Khidr Waja, 13, for leading us in cheer and who kept the team going through the night and day which won us the Spirit trophy.

The group was led by Kyle Sasman, troop scouter; Samantha Mcmaster, assistant troop scouter and Angel Brink, assistant troop.

Helmsman, Micah Davies, 16, was on the Helmen for 16 of the 24 hours for which he won the award for the most hours on the helm at the event and other awards.

This weekend, we displayed incredible teamwork and it paid off in ways we never thought of. To walk away with three trophies is an amazing achievement.
