South Peninsula Cricket Club continued their winning streak when they travelled to the northern suburbs to beat Wesbank in a Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) Second Division 40-over match on Saturday, January 28.
Their latest win follows hot on the heals of their 10-wicket win against visitors Delft CC, played in scorching temperatures, at Parkwood sports complex, the previous week.
In a riveting cricket clash on Saturday, at the Khayelitsha Cricket Oval, SP faced off against Wesbank in a highly anticipated match. Opting to set the tone, South Peninsula won the toss and chose to bat first, putting up an impressive score of 332 for the loss of 9 wickets in the allotted 40 overs.
The stand-out performers with the bat for South Peninsula were Daniel Thomas, who played a sensational innings, scoring 118 runs, followed by Jean Adams contributing 69 runs, and Gary Pinto adding 39 to the total.
Facing a challenging target, Wesbank took to the crease but struggled against the formidable South Peninsula bowling attack. Wesbank was bowled out for a mere 121 runs in 32 overs, resulting in a resounding victory for South Peninsula by 201 runs.
The leading wicket-takers for South Peninsula were Jovan Rudolph, who claimed an impressive 4 wickets for 18 runs in 8 overs, and Jean Adams, who secured 3 wickets for 22 runs in 8 overs.
Reflecting on the match, South Peninsula expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, emphasising the importance of maintaining high levels of intensity and not becoming complacent. The game was marked by hard-fought competition, yet maintained a commendable spirit on the field. This victory brings South Peninsula one step closer to their season goals.
It’s been a brilliant season thus far with South Peninsula having played 14 matches, winning 13 and drawing one match, says the match and registration secretary, Cheslyn van Sensie.
Their First Team are current log leaders in the Second Division, he said, leading Strand by two points going into last Saturday's match against Delft.
“Our main club goal is for promotion to the First Division D, we are now in a good position to challenge for the league title as well,” he said.
The club, established in 1984, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and currently has two senior sides. Van Sensie said there are plans to start a junior division in the upcoming season.
Looking ahead, he said, South Peninsula eagerly anticipates their next challenge at the Parkwood Sports Complex, where they will face off against Cape Peninsula University of Technology in what promises to be another exciting encounter.
Training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursday from 5.30pm at the Parkwood Sports Complex behind Fairmount High School.
