Two young Kimberley women, Donica Nazlin Tafel and Jaydean Felicity Kaars, are preparing to represent South Africa at the All Africa Games in Accra, Ghana, this March in the sport of Taekwondo, in what is an exciting development in their story.
Hailing from the Shidokwon Academy in Roodepan, these first-degree black belt athletes achieved national colours in 2022. They proudly wore their colours during the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games in Malawi.
Donica and Jaydean, currently navigating the challenges of Grade 12 at Emmanuel Secondary School, exemplify the genuine spirit of student-athletes. Despite facing academic obstacles, they remain resilient and prepared to serve as ambassadors, not just for Taekwondo but also for South Africa.
Having already faced tough battles in the academic arena, these young athletes told the DFA that they are mentally prepared for the journey ahead, aiming to bring glory to their nation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The dream is to see them as integral members of the APEX programme, setting the stage for a medal-worthy performance in the upcoming Olympics.
In a heartwarming conversation with the athletes during a break in one of their rigorous training sessions, Donica and Jaydean expressed their sheer excitement about the upcoming ACCRA tournament to the DFA.“We train really hard every day, giving our best during every session,” shared one of the enthusiastic athletes.
According to the girls, their families stand firmly behind them, brimming with pride and unwavering support.
When asked about their aspirations after school, both athletes revealed a shared dream of becoming medical doctors. A testament to their determination, these young champions are not only aiming high in the world of Taekwondo but also envisioning a future where they can contribute to society in the medical field.
Master trainer, Sabonim David Kok, the guiding force behind these talented individuals, beamed with pride when discussing his students.
“They have worked really hard to achieve what they have, and I hope that their dedication to this sport will open doors for study bursaries in the future,” said Kok, emphasising the potential positive impact of Taekwondo on their post-school endeavours.
As these two spirited athletes set their sights on ACCRA, the community rallied behind them, eager to witness the triumphs of Donica Tafel and Jaydean Kaars on the continental stage.
With dreams of Olympic glory on the horizon, these local heroes embody the true essence of passion, dedication, and the undying spirit of South African sportsmanship.
