Team selected for Homeless World Cup in Seoul

The Homeless World Cup Trials at Oasis’s Reach For Your Dreams programme last week was a showcase of talent, determination and sportsmanship.

Participants from across the region made their way to Schaapkraal to compete for a chance to represent South Africa at the Homeless World Cup in Seoul, South Korea, in September.

It will be the first time since its inception in 2003 the tournament will be hosted in Asia, with the University of Hanyang playing hosts in Seoul.

The Homeless World Cup has its own unique format and rules. It is a four-a-side squad format, with eight rolling substitutes, played over 14 minutes.

Founder of the Oasis Reach For Your Dreams foundation, Cliffy Martinus said the support will go a long way in helping a homeless player to showcase their talents on an international stage.

Former Bafana Bafana central defender Nasief Morris joined the head coach Bongani Mathiso in selecting the final squad last Thursday.

The trials were also attended by the Oasis Cape Agulhus, as well as the executive mayor, Raymond Ross.

Oasis Reach For Your Dreams thanked coach Bongani Mathiso and coach Nasief Morris on the final selection on Mandela Day. The player’s showers on the day were donated by Viva Con Agua South Africa. Founder, Cliffy Martinus thanked the Oasis Cape Agulhas, the executive mayor Raymond Ross and the players that made it out to the trials last Thursday.

The 19th edition of the much-loved global football tournament, the Homeless World Cup, will take place from Saturday 21 to Saturday 28, September 2024, Seoul, Korea.
