An outstanding all-round performance from promising seamer Imran Philander set Ottoman on the way to a five-wicket win over Kraaifontein in their opening One Day Cup Premier League match.
Philander, a former national under-19 player, ripped through the homeside’s batting line-up by taking 4/42 in his 10 overs and guiding his side to their first win with a valuable unbeaten 29 runs off just 22 deliveries which included two four and gigantic six.
The other not out batter was Mohamed Imran (1). The efforts of Philander and co helped restrict the homeside to 212/8 in their 50 overs.
Ottoman have set their sights on retaining their hard-fought promotion to the Western Province Cricket Association top competition, after spending last season in the lower division.
The visitors’ openers Mujahid Toffar (53) and Mubashier Omar (27) laid the foundation with a 79-run partnership while Abdul-Qadeer Salie top scored with superb innings of 62 runs off 79 deliveries.
With the homeside struggling on 74/4 in the 26th over it was a superb 109 fifth wicket partnership between Franco Kasner (86) and Malwande Zamo (61), which helped their side put together a competitive score on the board.
Kraaifontein and Ottoman meanwhile lost their T20 matches on Sunday. Ottoman went down by 30 runs to Durbanville after they were restricted to 104/9 while chasing 134/8 set by the homeside.
At the Vineyard in Claremont, Kraaifontein lost both their games. In the first encounter they went down by five wickets to Claremont while Bellville won the second match by eight wickets with opener Andru Serdyn top-scoring with 53 from 21 balls which included six sixes and two boundaries.
Meanwhile, at the Terry Eksteen Oval Brackenfell’s opener Werner Moolman’s splendid 116 from 135 deliveries which included 11 boundaries and four sixes could not help his side from going down by six wickets to champions Rondebosch in the One Day Cup encounter. Moolman’s contribution and that of Rushdi Jappie (40) and Jaco Castle (30*) help Brackenfell to reach 256/4 in their 50 overs.
Rondebosch, however, reached the winning target with Christiaan Oberholzer (84) and Jordan Neill (77) top scoring.
