FALCON City FC, a team competing in the SAFA Northern Cape ABC Motsepe League, is grappling with the aftermath of a shocking incident of violence and intimidation that happened in Jan Kempdorp.
The team’s chairman, Robert Marume, and four players were allegedly physically attacked during a recent match against Jacksa Spears FC.
In a heartfelt letter, Marume detailed the harrowing events that unfolded, recounting how he and the players were chased from the stadium.
“I was physically attacked and chased from the stadium together with four players who were part of the team sheet.” Marume writes. “We were forced to hide for approximately three hours, fearing for our lives,” he added.
The team's vehicle also allegedly became a target of the aggression, with windows being smashed.
Marume expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, highlighting his passion for the sport. “I am writing this letter with great regret for my sincere love for football, as our soccer match was disrupted by hooligans. Sadly, my passion and love for the game was under great threat.”
Adding to the controversy, Falcon City FC has lodged a formal protest against Jacksa Spears FC, alleging that the opposing team fielded seven unregistered players. This claim has added fuel to the fire, as Marume called for urgent intervention from SAFA NC.
“I hope and pray that SAFA NC treat this matter with extreme urgency, as it will potentially result in compromising the quality of football in our province.”
Marume's plea underscores the resilience and dedication of his team amidst such adversity. “The degree of our unwavering effort cannot be measured by the amount of scars on our bodies,” he poignantly remarked.
Yet, despite these serious allegations and calls for action, Jacksa Spears has yet to comment on the incident or the claims made by Falcon City. Meanwhile, the football community eagerly awaits SAFA NC’s response to this troubling situation.
The incident raises concerns about the integrity and safety of football matches in the region, emphasising the need for stringent measures to protect players and officials.
