Juvie Boy fans go wild in the stand during Saturday's Section 2 Kaapse Klopse choral competition finals, at Athlone Stadium

Colourful costumes and Cape-flavoured rhythms had Athlone Stadium rocking on Saturday at the Kaapse Klopse Choral Competition Section 2 finals.
And when the dust settled, one crew stood tall — Juvie Boy Entertainers (JBE) from Lentegeur, crowned carnival kings for the third consecutive year. They brought swag, sound, and straight fire to the stage. This troupe didn’t just perform — they brought the juice, literally and figuratively, and sealed the deal to claim the overall championship in true Juvie style.

Setting the tone from the jump in their final performance, their set kicked off with a slick video intro, styled like a high-octane commercial for an energy drink, Juvie Juice. The clip threw viewers into a gladiator showdown straight out of ancient Rome, where warriors faced raging tigers at the Colosseum — until a shot of magical Juvie Juice flips the script, powering them to victory. The message was clear: when Juvie Boys enter the arena, like gladiators of yesteryear, survival alone is never enough — domination is the only outcome.
And dominate they did, winning 10 out of fifteen categories, including best overall position, best group song, best band, best coon song, and best juvenile and female sentimental items.

No doubt, they certainly brought the house down with a repertoire that combines traditional Klopse sounds with modern, standout musical arrangements and choreography.
Established in 2012, JBE is all about having the right people and systems in place to ensure success, said Yusuf Gester, a member of the team’s senior management.
“We have a very talented engineering team that plans every item of the competition, and they work very closely with our choral and band coaches,” he said.
Beyond the competition arena, "the team is built on a foundation of strong community involvement, he said.

“For JBE, serving the community and having a troupe is just one part of the project, which creates other platforms to serve our people,” he said. “The minstrel activities themselves are more about the fun and enjoyment, and also to showcase the talent of our performers and staff.”
While happy with the result, Gester was quick to point out the challenges they face in trying to stay at the top of their game
“One of the biggest challenges for troupes is funding, as the sport demands a significant amount of resources, and for JBE to stay on top of the game means we need to spend more and more every season. You never overcome it, but we welcome donors and sponsors to come on board,” he said.
“It takes a lot of human resources, but appointments of staff are critical. You need lots of time to implement all the plans and projects, and of course, you need loads of finances, which is often lacking,” he said.
