Chelsea player and Marc Cucurella is facing a Public Relations (PR) nightmare after he posted an Instagram picture of his new Puma boots in the dustbin.
This comes after he slipped twice during Chelsea’s Premier League 4-3 victory over Tottenham in London over the weekend.
Apparently trying to make light of his mistakes and blaming his footwear, both of them leading to Spurs goals and seeing Chelsea go 2-0 down, Cucurella apologised to Chelsea fans alongside a picture of the new Puma shoes in the dustbin.
The post has since been deleted, but the PR damage has already been done by the young wing-back.
The big problem though, is that the 26-year-old Cucurella is a Puma ambassador and his glib post will not be received well by the sports brand.
Former Orlando Pirates and current Cape Town Spurs player Michael Morton who has become something of a pundit on social media, weighed in on the matter.
Morton said in a post on X: “Marc Cucurella slips twice and on both occasions, Tottenham go ahead and score goals. It’s the worst nightmare for a footballer. The commentators were saying he’s so unprofessional and he’s wearing the wrong attire.
“It’s a nightmare for Puma, but look at these studs. You can’t be blaming those surely?”
The shoes in question are the new Future 8 boots from Puma which will retail for around R5000 in England.
Meanwhile, Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca was not too harsh on Cucurella in his post-match press conference: “We conceded two goals from Cucu [Cucurella]. It can happen. It happened to the same player twice, but it’s something that has happened many times in world football.
