Much like the famous Route 66 in the United States, and our local Route 62 that meanders through the small towns of Barrydale, Montagu, Ashton, Bonnievale, Robertson and McGregor, Mossel Bay has launched Route 12.
Route 12 is the gateway to the Garden Route, encompassing Vleesbaai to the west of Mossel Bay, with Fransmanshoek, Boggomsbaai, Danabaai, Mossel Bay, Hartenbos, Kleinbrak River and Grootbrak River moving up towards the east coast.
It also includes Glentana in the east, with Friemersheim, Ruiterbos and Herbertsdale making up the inland legs of the journey.
The route is home to multiple award-winning game and wine farms, with countless activities available for families, nature lovers, adrenaline junkies and cultural enthusiasts.
The area also offers a wide array of entertainment, dining and accommodation options.
Mossel Bay Tourism COO Lieschke Steven-Jennings explained: “Route 12 takes visitors and locals on a journey through the 12 iconic towns that make up the greater Iconic Mossel Bay area. Here, you’ll discover untouched beaches, beautiful scenery, cultural landmarks and countless activities”.

Mayor Kotzé recognises that tourism depends on the involvement and support of local communities. “While Mossel Bay Tourism and the municipality can effectively market Route 12, the true essence of the experience lies in the community-driven tourism products,” he said.
Combined with Mossel Bay’s 320 days of sunshine a year, Route 12 is not just a summer destination but one that can be enjoyed all year round.
