"We are thankful that so many were able to look beyond the narrative of danger often associated with our townships."
These were the words from Khayelitsha Athletic Club chairman Lubabalo Badi and race director Siphiwo Klaas after successfully hosting the club’s annual 10km run in Mandela Park, Khayelitsha.
Safety is often the biggest issue and talking point for many when it comes to township sporting events, especially for those coming from outside these areas.

However, running clubs from all over Cape Town chose to look past that narrative and took a chance by supporting a Kasi run, with hopes that the day would bring nothing but a safe and vibrant running experience.
And that’s exactly what it turned out to be: simply a fun day of putting one foot in front of the other, right in the heart of Khayelitsha.
In fact, the reviews from the many runners who came out in their numbers were overwhelmingly positive according to the race organisers.

That is not to say the runners blindly took a chance despite the usual safety concerns. Rather, it was the commitment and assurance from all involved stakeholders who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a smooth and safe day’s proceedings.
This included the visible presence of the South African Police Service, Metro Police and local security personnel throughout the event. Their coordinated efforts played a key role in the event’s success.
“We are grateful that so many runners were able to help dispel the narrative associated with danger in our communities and show that we are capable of hosting and ensuring the safety of our visitors,” said Klaas.
