GQ: Welcome, Dr. Ourian. Thanks for giving us your valuable time. We would like to start the interview by asking you what you love most about the cosmetic industry?
Dr. Simon Qurian (Dr.): The pleasure’s all mine.
I think the most gratifying feeling for me is that my work makes people feel better about themselves.
Whether it is an aesthetically enhanced face to help a patient look more beautiful or a procedure that helps patients find a solution to tackle their insecurities, I know that every action of mine is creating an impact.
When a patient leaves my office happy and smiling, I know I made the right choice in building a career in the cosmetic industry.
GQ: What is the best advice you have ever received, and how did it change your life?
Dr. : Learn from every quarter, and you will never return home empty-handed. I’m not sure where I heard or who gave me this bit of advice, but it certainly transformed the way I live my personal and professional life.
I try to learn as much as I can in every sphere of life. Even if I do not know how and where all that I’m learning will prove to be helpful, I just do not stop accumulating knowledge.
I learn from those who come to learn from me, I learn from those who are willing to teach, and I learn from those who knowingly or unknowingly send my way the blessings of their own learnings.
GQ: In your opinion, is it important for life purposes to align with professional goals and ambitions?
Dr. : Professional goals and ambitions are an integral part of life and can be tagged as life purposes too.
Without a finish line to run towards or a goal to work towards, you will have no purpose to even begin your day, let alone define your life’s purpose and work towards it.
Therefore, it is essential that your life purposes match your professional goals and ambitions.
GQ: Who played a big role in your life and inspired you to achieve great things?
Dr. : The most important role models in my life? It seems, aren't superstars or celebrities. They're the "everyday" people who quietly set examples for you - coaches, teachers, parents.
People about, whom you say to yourself, perhaps not even consciously, "I want to be like that."
My parents were my heroes and my role models too. They gave up a lot to make sure their children would have a chance at a good life.
I thought long and hard over decisions that I would make because I never wanted to disappoint them. Watching them every day growing up had the most profound impact on who I am today.
GQ: What is your definition of success?
Dr. : Personal success is seldom of any consequence. If you wish to work towards long-lasting success that truly matters, build your work platform on encouraging and inspiring others.
True success lies in how capable you are in helping others emulate your success. When you play a part in the success of others, your own success graph gets better too.
GQ: What are some of the habits you have developed that have led to your success?
Dr. : While there is a string of habits that helps me do more with my day, there are three habits, in particular, that I know have certainly contributed to my success.
One: My habit of paying attention to the tiniest details when it comes to patient care. This has helped me fine-tune my surgeries and push the procedures to their optimal end every time.
Two: The healthy habit of gaining knowledge at every chance and then sharing it with others. In doing this, I have bettered the lives of so many, at the same time bettering my own too.
Three: Never giving up on any goal or ambition because of a few hurdles. Once I have made up my mind to achieve something, I know I will give it my all.
Others slow down when they hit a wall. I double down on it and find ways to break the wall down.
GQ: In the past few years, we have seen a positive change towards men who decide to have cosmetic work done; however, still, not many men go for cosmetic procedures. Is there stigma and shame attached to having cosmetic work done as a man even today?
Dr. : Unfortunately, this holds true even in today’s supposedly progressive society. We often associate shame and stigma with the way women are treated in many cultures.
When it comes to cosmetic surgery, however, I have often witnessed men being traumatized by the general opinion of the masses.
As individuals, most men would gladly undertake a cosmetic procedure if it is done under wraps. But if the treatment or the results from it cannot be hidden, the fear of ridicule will stop most men. And this is indeed heartbreaking.
GQ: What are the most popular procedures you do for men?
Dr. : Several procedures that are a part of a woman’s cosmetic enhancement routine are popular with men too. Fillers, body procedures to make cosmetic corrections, and laser skin resurfacing are among the most popular options with men.
However, one of the procedures that stands out in the case of men is hair replacement therapy. Balding and hair loss are common problems that most men face.
And a receding hairline or bald spot is often a cause of worry or lack of self-esteem for many men.
GQ: Do you have any beginner’s advice for a man considering cosmetic surgery?
Dr. : Men often wrongly assume that cosmetic surgery or any other enhancement procedure that benefits the cosmetic appearance of a person is only reserved for women.
This is entirely untrue. Since time immemorial, men have paid due attention to their appearance, and this has added to their confidence and prowess.
So, there’s no reason to double guess your decision—as a guy, you have as much right as girls to correct or enhance your physical appearance.
