Good Hope FM presenter and radio DJ Kyeezi has described the opening of his latest business venture, a champagne lounge, as a fulfilment of a lifelong dream for him and his partners.
Destiny, launched on Sunday, is just in time for the festive season when most people are in the mood to be out and about.
For the new venture, Khanya “Kyeezi” Siyengo joined forces with restaurateur Theo Pearson, events specialist Bevan Chetty and marketing aficionado Natano Brache.
Destiny is located at 88 Shortmarket Street in Cape Town and is open Thursday to Sunday from 9pm to 4am.
Siyengo said Destiny was launched after he and his partners noticed a void in the local entertainment scene.
“I am always out playing at locations around the country. I saw that lately it’s always a big show about who has the most money,” he said.
“No one is listening to the music and capturing the vibe of having fun. That was the first indicator that we can create a space where people can dance, feel safe and create great memories.”
Siyengo said the increased tourism in South Africa was another factor that motivated him and his partners to open Destiny.
“In the last six months, we’ve seen a big increase in tourism in Cape Town and South Africa,” he said.
“This is why Destiny came about. We saw the space and wanted to create a space for everyone to have a good time in.”
The lounge is named Destiny because it’s your “final destination” for where the night ends.
One of Destiny’s most important features is the safety of its guests, Siyengo said.
“We have surveillance cameras across the entire venue along with 10 professionally trained security detail.”
He added: “Thursday nights are ladies’ night and we want everyone to feel safe. It’s a big priority to me that women especially feel safe. It’s a big deal.”
As opposed to most nightclubs or lounges, Destiny has seating for general and VIP access. There are bathrooms with big mirrors for your latest Instagram post, and USB charging ports accessible to all.
Siyengo said this venture came about with four black businessmen fulfilling a lifelong dream.
“Aligning our visions and launching this undertaking together was true ‘destiny’,” he said.
“With our combined expertise and experience in the entertainment and event industries, we plan to take the city by storm in the next few weeks.”
Brache said they chose the location for Destiny based on how unique it was.
“It’s the uniqueness of the venue in Cape Town, one of its kind and a place where you can dance,” he said.
