A 40-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning, August 7 after being found in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Parkwood.

According to Sergeant Alridge Isaacs, spokesperson for the Grassy Park police, officers were conducting routine patrols around 5am in Parkers Walk when they spotted two unknown men. Upon noticing the marked police vehicle, one of the suspects fled on foot.

“A member of the patrol team gave chase. During the pursuit, the suspect discarded a black metal Smith & Wesson Taurus revolver, which was later recovered and found to contain two rounds of ammunition,” said Sergeant Isaacs.

The suspect was apprehended shortly afterward and arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He remains in police custody and is expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.
