A Zeekoevlei Primary School teacher has fulfilled her dream of becoming an author with the launch of her debut book, Rise, at a private celebration with family and friends on Friday, August 15.

For Michelle Petersen, Rise is more than just a milestone. It is a testimony of resilience, faith, and the power of new beginnings.

“I wanted people to know that there is hope in the storm,” she said. “They don’t need to give up on life.”

Rise is aimed at men and women who are experiencing trauma.

At the age of 52, the Eagle Park resident reflected on a life marked by hardship and healing. Raised in Lotus River, Ms Petersen broke away from abusive relationships to find lasting peace. Her book, drawn from personal experiences, offers encouragement and practical advice to both men and women facing abuse.

“It’s not easy to find the courage to start over, heal your emotional and physical scars, and defeat the fear of what people would say,” she said. “But with God, everything is possible.”

Ms Petersen’s journey has also shaped her calling as a teacher, protector, and mentor. Having witnessed corporal punishment as a child, she has become a fierce defender of young people in her classroom and beyond. A devoted Christian, she also hosts Real Talk, a faith-based podcast that tackles issues such as clinical depression, childhood trauma, and empowerment.

At home, Ms Petersen is deeply rooted in her family life with her husband, Adam, and their three children - Duncan, Leah, and Bryson.

Her message is unwavering: "Whatever the circumstance, people can rise above." She has endured struggle but refused to be defined by it.

Ms Petersen is not in a hurry to start her next writing project. “My prayer is that as many people as possible will read this book. By the grace of God, I know that many lives will be impacted,” she said. “For now, I would say that we wait on God.”

Published by Shofar Books, Rise is available now at R200.
