Fairmont High School has opened the doors to its new Wellness Hub — a calm, inviting space designed to give pupils a place to relax, reflect, and seek support when life feels overwhelming.
Unveiled on Thursday, October 23, the hub is housed in a prefabricated structure on the school grounds and furnished with comfortable couches, chairs, a table, and warm, welcoming décor to create a safe and soothing atmosphere.
The project was funded by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and co-ordinated by its Metro South team.
Metro South social work supervisor Lucinda Pelston said the hub will serve as an important resource for pupils facing challenges such as substance abuse, gangsterism, and trauma.
“This Wellness Hub will bring more services to the school because we will partner with various service providers,” said Ms Pelston.
Several organisations will offer their services through the Wellness Hub, including Life Choices, Rape Crisis, Childline, and the local community clinic.
Ms Pelston said the school will set up a schedule to indicate when each service provider will be available, adding that parents may also benefit from the support offered through these partnerships.
Acting principal Junaid Anthony said the Wellness Hub will play a vital role in supporting pupils who struggle with behavioural challenges or come from communities affected by poverty and family instability.
“This hub gives pupils a safe space to express how they feel, to speak to someone who understands and won’t judge them,” he said. “It will make a huge difference in helping them build self-esteem and self-respect.”
