Perivale Primary School teacher, Nicolene Langner has recently won the Sports Coach of the Year award at the School Enrichment Awards, hosted by the Metropole South Education Department (MSED) at the Zwaanswyk Academy in Retreat.
Ms. Langner from Plumstead has been the school’s netball coach for the past 10 years, during which she has coached the under-9, under-11, and under-13 girls' netball teams.
She said sport is much more than a game. “It builds character, discipline, and resilience. In education, we must never underestimate the power of sport to shape a child holistically,” she said.
Ms Langner said she is proud of her girls who made the Western Province (WP) trials in netball this year. “Although they did not make the WP team, the value added to their self-esteem was amazing,” she said. She told her girls that next year they will come back stronger and harder.
Ms Langner said she will continue this work with passion and compassion.
“Sport gives the pupil an opportunity to escape and realise that through hard work they can achieve a better tomorrow,” she said.
