After four years of appeals from residents, the City of Cape Town has finally installed a fence to close off the crime-plagued gap between Applemist and Woodlands Roads in Ottery.

The closure, completed last week, aims to curb criminal activity and increase safety in the area.

Residents say the gap had long been exploited by criminals for thefts, break-ins, and other illegal activities, making the neighbourhood feel unsafe. Community members have been calling on the City to take action since 2121, citing the urgent need to protect families and restore peace of mind. The new fence marks a significant victory for the community after years of lobbying (“Ottery residents mind the gap”, Southern Mail, 2024).

Ward 66 Councillor William Akim said: “The Woodlands Road gap in Ottery East has been closed with a clear palisade fence. A public participation process was followed for the community to comment last year, and the City of Cape Town has appointed a contractor to install the fence.”
