The Work Readiness Programme at Where Rainbows Meet Training and Development Foundation is helping unemployed adults gain the skills and confidence needed to secure meaningful employment.

The organisation is tackling unemployment head-on, arming adults and youth with the skills, confidence, and support they need to thrive in today’s competitive job market, said founder Mymoena Scholtz.

“Our Work Readiness programme addresses these challenges by providing a holistic approach to job readiness. The programme combines computer skills training with psychosocial support, recognizing that emotional and psychological well-being are critical components of employability,” she said.

Jeremitha Gertse, one participant, shared her journey, explaining that she initially joined the programme to learn life skills, time management, and basic computer use. “I moved back to Cape Town from Johannesburg as an unemployed mother of four with nothing,” she said. “Someone told me about the programme, so I gave it a try. Four years later, I’m here, and it’s changed my life.”

After completing the programme, she first worked as an office administrator at Where Rainbows Meet and is now in her second year as a contract team leader at International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People (ASSITEJ), a non-profit, international, member-based, non-governmental organisation (NGO), overseeing office administration and staff.

Reflecting on her experience, she encouraged others to invest in their education.

“I want to go back to school and complete my matric,” she said.

Her story highlights the impact of structured training and mentorship. When asked if the programme helped her secure employment, she responded with a confident “Yes,” showing that these initiatives can provide real pathways out of unemployment and toward independence.

Ms Scholtz said: “Since its inception, the Work Readiness Programme has produced notable results. Officials report that over 80% of participants secure employment within three to six months of completing the program. Participants have also shown significant improvements in self-confidence, communication skills, and overall employability. Many have gone on to find jobs in industries they previously considered out of reach, including IT, customer service, and administration.”

Training includes:

  1. Computer skills training participants receive hands-on training in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, email management, and online job search techniques. This foundational training enables them to navigate the digital job market with confidence.
  2. Psychosocial support: A team of experienced facilitators guides resume building, interview preparation, and job search strategies. Participants also receive support with building self-confidence, overcoming anxiety, and developing a growth mindset.
  3. Job search assistance: Participants in searching for job openings will be assisted in tailoring their applications and preparing for interviews. The team also provides access to job listings, networking opportunities, and employer connections.
  4. Mock interviews: To prepare participants for the realities of job interviews, they conduct mock interviews, providing constructive feedback and coaching to improve their performance.

The benefits of the skills training: empowering individuals with employable skills, contributing to the economic growth and development of our communities. Employed individuals are more likely to:

- Contribute to their communities through volunteering and civic engagement

- Support local businesses and entrepreneurs

- Invest in their children's education and well-being

Unemployment can lead to a range of social ills:
