Dozens of cats and dogs at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA rely on the simplest of items - newspapers - to recover safely, but supplies are running dangerously low.

The SPCA has issued an urgent call for old newspapers to help care for the growing number of animals in its hospital and during ongoing sterilisation drives.

Wendy Loots, supporter relations at the SPCA, said newspapers play a vital role in keeping hospital areas clean, dry, and hygienic.

“These simple sheets of paper make an enormous difference to the comfort, hygiene and recovery of animals,” she said.

“They are especially important for pets recovering after sterilisation, before we can provide them with normal bedding like towels and blankets.”

The SPCA is currently caring for around 400 animals at any given time, with numbers fluctuating daily depending on admissions and discharges.

“Hospital care, recovery wards and sterilisation drives all rely heavily on newspapers,” Ms Loots said.

“We go through a huge quantity every week. Without enough, it becomes much harder to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for the animals.”

She urged members of the public to donate newspapers rather than discard them.

“Even small contributions make a real difference,” she said. “Each sheet helps keep tails wagging and paws safe.”

Donations can be dropped off at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA in Grassy Park. For those unable to deliver newspapers, arrangements for collection can be made - email fundassist@spca-ct.co.za.
