Kannemeyer Primary School pupils are preparing to take the stage later this month with their musical, Echoes of District 6: Our Story, Our Voice.

The production, co-written and co-directed by dancer, singer and actor Webster Mauritz and dance instructor Wendy Abrahams, brings the history and spirit of District Six to life through music, dance, and storytelling.

At the heart of the musical is pupil Jonah Papier, who takes on the role of Oupa, sharing his memories of growing up in District Six. His story is carried forward by fellow pupils Alexandra Scullard, Hadassah Barnes, and Ezra Holland, who re-enact Oupa’s experiences during the area’s vibrant heyday. The rest of the school’s pupils will add their voices and energy through song and dance, supporting the main cast in telling this powerful story.

Ms Abrahams said the team worked to make the story real, relevant, and a valuable learning experience for everyone involved.

Mr Mauritz added that the musical also explores themes that remain as important today as they were in the past. “We highlight the need for parents to be more supportive of teachers, and we also address the challenge of bullying,” he said.

Through this production, the pupils are being educated engagingly, Mr Mauritz said.

“We wanted them to learn about the history of District Six, and during rehearsals they asked many thoughtful questions,” he said.

Acting school principal, Arnola Ross, said they chose District Six as a theme as they wanted to do something that is local to Cape Town.

Ms Ross said she was proud of her pupils who are preparing for this play. “They are confident and committed, and come to rehearsals and practice every Saturday,” she said.

Echoes of District 6: Our Story, Our Voice will show at Kannemeyer Primary School hall on Monday, September 29, and Tuesday, September 30, from 6.30pm. Tickets can be purchased at their school located at 55v, Third Avenue, Grassy Park for R100 each. You can also call the office during school hours at 021 706 2365.
